BMBC
management organized recently a security training for key office and on-site
staff as part of the capacity building program and its social commitment that
include being sensitive to the environment and ensuring safe workplace. The
training was designed to provide practical knowledge and skills to project
staff to prevent and manage security and safety incidents at construction
sites.
As a leading construction enterprise in the country, BMBC strives to comply with nationally and internationally recognized industry’s standards. These include norms and standards related with social and environmental safeguarding and ensuring maximum safety at construction sites.
BMBC is currently one of the biggest private employers in the construction sector in Burundi. It counts for the largest share of housing, residential and commercial construction projects in the country. In addition to dozens of permanent staff including management, administration and technical office and on-site staff, there are close to 600 daily or regular workers on construction sites around the country.
Moreover, BMBC construction sites are dominated by unprecedented housing projects employing hundreds of workers each day, with intense circulation of vehicles including trucks and machines, and huge amounts of construction materials and equipment of all sorts.
The
holistic approach used by BMBC in construction means also that in the housing
project sites there are presence of various teams working concurrently on
different tasks including masonry and finishing works, electricity and water installations.
BMBC Homes Gahahe site hosts several workshops including carpentry, furniture
manufacturing, iron and aliminium welding, etc.
All this indicate the need to ensure strong and working mechanisms for prevention of safety and security incidents and maximum preparedness for the management of those that may erupt any time. It is therefore clear why order and safety becomes a priority in our daily work especially at construction sites.
In
collaboration with BMBC’s Safety and Order unit, a team of security experts was
recruited to provide practical training for staff to be able to lead efforts
for prevention of accidents and respond to incidents such as fire outbreaks in
the construction sites. Trained staff will be supported to organize to share
the skills with more staff and workers. Further training will be extended to
other social and environmental safeguarding and safety aspects.
Trained members will be expected to share the acquired knowledge with others in their respective departments in order to reach a greater number of trained employees and workers. The training will be extended to other aspects of safety and social and environmental safeguarding.
